Hawthorne Biography

Please read the following biographical information about Nathaniel Hawthorne and then write a comment to this post that summarizes 2-3 things about Hawthorne that you find interesting. I would also recommend recording those 2-3 details in your notes so you have them for the quiz.

Early Life
Nathaniel Hawthorne was born in 1804 in the city of Salem, Massachusetts to Nathaniel Hathorne and the former Elizabeth Clarke Manning. His ancestors include John Hathorne, a judge during the Salem Witch Trials. Nathaniel later added a "w" to make his name "Hawthorne". He entered Bowdoin College in 1821, was elected to Phi Beta Kappa in 1824, and graduated in 1825.

Adult Life (Writing and Other Careers)

Hawthorne anonymously published his first work, a novel titled Fanshawe, in 1828. He published several short stories in various periodicals which he collected in 1837 as Twice-Told Tales. The next year, he became engaged to Sophia Peabody. He worked at a Custom House and joinedBrook Farm, a transcendentalist community, before marrying Peabody in 1842. The couple moved to The Old Manse in Concord, Massachusetts, later moving to Salem, the Berkshires, then to The Wayside in Concord. The Scarlet Letter was published in 1850, followed by a succession of other novels. A political appointment took Hawthorne and family to Europe before their return to The Wayside in 1860.

Much of Hawthorne's writing centers on New England, many works featuring moral allegories with a Puritan inspiration. His fiction works are considered part of the Romantic movement and, more specifically, dark romanticism. His themes often center on the inherent evil and sin of humanity, and his works often have moral messages and deep psychological complexity. His published works include novels, short stories, and a biography of his friend Franklin Pierce.

Later Years and Death
Later years and deathAt the outset of the American Civil War, Hawthorne traveled with William D. Ticknor to Washington, D.C.. There, he met Abraham Lincoln and other notable figures. He wrote about his experiences in the essay "Chiefly About War Matters" in 1862. Failing health prevented him from completing several more romances. Suffering from pain in his stomach, Hawthorne insisted on a recuperative trip with his friend Franklin Pierce, though his neighbor Bronson Alcott was concerned Hawthorne was too ill. While on a tour of the White Mountains, Hawthorne died in his sleep on May 19, 1864, in Plymouth, New Hampshire. Pierce sent a telegram to Elizabeth Peabody to inform Hawthorne's wife in person; she was too saddened by the news to handle the funeral arrangements herself. Hawthorne's son Julian, at the time a freshman at Harvard College, learned of his father's death the next day; coincidentally, it was the same day he was initiated into the Delta Kappa Epsilon fraternity by being placed blindfolded into a coffin. Longfellow wrote a tribute poem to Hawthorne, published in 1866, called "The Bells of Lynn." Hawthorne was buried on what is now known as "Authors' Ridge" in Sleepy Hollow Cemetery, Concord, Massachusetts. Pallbearers included Longfellow, Emerson, Holmes, Alcott, James Thomas Fields, and Edwin Percy Whipple. Emerson wrote of the funeral: "I thought there was a tragic element in the event, that might be more fully rendered,—in the painful solitude of the man, which, I suppose, could no longer be endured, & he died of it."

A fact I found interesting about Nathaniel Hawthorne is that his grandfather was a judge in the Salem Witch Trials. Another thing I found interesting, was that he met many important officials like Abraham Lincoln, but unfortunately he died of natural causes, unlike Poe.

I find it interesting that Nathaniel Hawthorn's first writing was anonymous but he still became quite famous for his writing. I was surprised by the fact Hawthorn was part of a Transcendentalist community at one time in his life, because his writings were known to be centered on evil and the sin of humanity. Lastly found it notable that Hawthorn met Abraham Lincoln, because Lincoln was such a renowned leader.

    Facts I found Interesting:

-Nathaniel Hawthorne is the son of John Hathorne, and I assume the reason he added the "w" was because he was ashamed of his father's role in the trials, and he didn't want to be associated with him.
    - The irony that his son got initiated in a coffin to his fraternity the day he died is creepy!

One thing I found interesting is that Hawthorne was not born with the “w” in his name, he added it later on in life. Also, he published his first novel anonymously, which most authors don’t typically do. Lastly, I found it very interesting/weird that his son found out about his death the same day he was abducted into his fraternity, by being blindfolded in a coffin.

  15. One thing of the things that I found interesting about Hawthorne's life was the fact that he published his first novel at the age of 24. To me that just seems like a very young age to have a novel published. His life and all of his accomplishments, to me is just astonishing.

  16. Two things about Hawthorne really stuck out to me. The first being that his wife was a transcendentalist, and he was a part of the romantic movement. This was shocking because they must've had very different emotional make up and perspectives. Also i find it very interesting that he met Abe Lincoln, because I imagine President Lincoln as being a very positive person.

Nathaniel Hawthorne was a fairly interesting man. He was born in Salem Massachusetts, and is somehow related to Judge Hawthorne of the Salem Witch Trials. Second he lived his later life during the Civil War and met Abraham Lincoln at this time. I find it interesting that Nathaniel Hawthorne lived in Salem after the witch trials had occurred, and was even related to one of the judges responsible for the deaths of some of those accused. I also found it interesting that he was very successful, and died a well known man. Unlike Poe, who constantly struggled with poverty throughout his life.

I find it interesting that he was related to one of the judges from the Salem Witch Trials because as far as I know, it is the same Hawthorne that we read about in The Crucible. Also, he died peacefully in his sleep while on a tour of the White Mountains in New Hampshire.
