I would describe Hawthorne's writing style as enchanting, dark, and mysterious. I believe his writing is enchanting because he seems to see the things around him as magical and mystic. It is dark because he focuses on things that aren't always happy or cheerful, and it is mysterious because there is sort of a creepy element to his writing. It leaves his reading wondering what he was thinking about or describing to add this sort of eerie undertone.

I don't think Nathaniel Hawthorne's writing is enchanting. I agree that his writing is dark and mysterious, but many of his other stories are not magical or enchanting. Instead, I think he was more interested in the psychological aspect of things. Perhaps this comes across as magical in some cases, but most of the time it's just dark and dreary.

I was surprised to hear that Nathaniel Hawthorne was born in Salem Massachusetts, the town which hosted the Salem Witch Trials. He also met Abraham Lincoln. Finally, after his death, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow wrote a tribute poem about Nathaniel Hawthorne which is quite surprising.

I think that Nathaniel Hawthorne's style of writing is very interesting. It's not one of my favorites (I like Edgar Allan Poe's style of writing a bit better) but I do find it interesting to read. The similarities I see between Hawthorne's and Poe's styles of writing is that they are obviously from the American Gothicism period, and that they tend to be more negative, and not very up-beat. Overall, I think Hawthorne's writing is unique.

Prompt: What similarities do you see in Poe's writing style and Hawthorne's writing style? Explain these similarities and also explain why you think they had these similarities.

Response: Poe's writing style and Hawthorne's writing styles are similar because The tones both tend to be darker and the writings over all focus on the negative aspects of life. They had these similarities because they both wrote during the American Gothic Literature time period and Gothic Lit. expresses darker thoughts.

I think that Poe's writing and Hawthorne s writing are yes similar but it think that was because they were both in the same time of this Gothic literature. I think while both were negative due to this harsh time Poe's was a little darker due to aspects even though Hawthorne had a pretty rough life as well.

Prompt: What similarities do you see in Poe's writing style and Hawthorne's writing style? Explain these similarities and also explain why you think they had these similarities.

Response: I think that Poe and Hawthorne’s writing styles were similar because they both had very negative, dark and sometimes spooky tones in their writing. This is because they were both writing in the American Gothic time period where people mostly focused on the negativity in life.

I think that Hawthorne's and Poe's writing are similar because they were both in the same time period of the Gothic times. Poe's writing was more dark than Hawthorne's but both had their dark spots. Hawthorne's and Poe's lives were also very similar.

Nathaniel Hawthorne was related to John Hathorne who was a judge during the infamous Salem Witch Trials. Nathaniel later changed his name from Hathorne to Hawthorne with a “w”. Hawthorne wrote during the gothic time period so his writing was centered around the inherent evil and sin of humanity.

Even though there are many similarities in the style of writing between the transcendentalists and gothics, there are quite a lot of differences as well. Transcendentalist believed that everyone was born pure and good which was clearly reflected in their writing while Gothics believed everyone had at least some bad in them. Gothics were in general darker, creepier, and more negative than the transcendentalist who believed in the connection to nature and pureness. Even though they had such different thoughts they both believed that people who possessed government power were most likely corrupt and that religion was bad.

  9. Hawthorne writing resembled the transcendentalists writing because they have a lot of the same ideas, its just Hawthorne uses a darker tone than the transcendentalist.

Poe's and Hawthorne's writing is very similar because both are very dark and sad. I think this is because they both wrote Gothic literature which is know to be dark. I also think their life experiences influenced their writing styles.

Prompt: f you had to select only three adjectives to describe Nathaniel Hawthorne's writing style, which three adjectives would you select? Explain why these adjectives best describe Hawthorne's writing style.

Answer: Three adjectives I would choose to describe Hawthrone's writing would be mysterious, dark, and creepy. In the excerpt I read in the previous section, I read "Young Goodman Brown." The reason I chose those three words for that excerpt is because it is mysterious because it is very vague in what it tells you, and you do not know what Young Goodman Brown is going to do at night. That's what makes it dark and creepy. You don't know what he is up to, and the dark also fits with the fact that this excerpt takes place at night.

From what I read, three adjectives that describe Hawthorne's writing style are...

Mysterious: He is a very vague writer, which I feel works in his advantage. It leaves the reader with a sense of mystery, and almost even confusion.

Simplistic: He doesn't use a lot of figurative language or complex writing, but it still gives the feel of complexity.

I ran out of time for the third one sorry.

How do you feel about Nathaniel Hawthorne's writing style? Do you like it? Why or why not?
I really like Hawthorne’s work, it’s entertaining and descriptive.
If you had to select only three adjectives to describe Nathaniel Hawthorne's writing style, which three adjectives would you select? Explain why these adjectives best describe Hawthorne's writing style.
Descriptive, he describes every little thing. Gloomy, he uses words like “pale” and “gloomy.” Dark, the stories that he tells often has a dark meaning to it.
What similarities do you see in Poe's writing style and Hawthorne's writing style? Explain these similarities and also explain why you think they had these similarities.
Both of Poe’s and Hathorne’s writing is very dark, and has more meaning behind the subject then thought of this is because they are both gothic writers and thought human will all turn on each other.
How does Hawthorne's writing style compare to the writing style of some of the transcendental writers we looked at last week? Explain your comparisons.
Hawthorne’s writing is alot darker and sadder than the transcendentals. The transcendentals would talk about happy subjects and use bright words, while gothic talk about dark subjects and gloomy words.

There are many similarities between Hawthorne and Poe's writing. They both wrote during the Gothic time which made their writing dark and emotional. Also, their life experiences influenced their writing

    Prompt:
"How do you feel about Nathaniel Hawthorne's writing style? Do you like it? Why or why not?"

    Answer:
I cannot say I am the biggest fan of Hawthorne's writing. He goes into a lot of details about what seem like unnecessary things. I do not need a paragraph describing a shoe, or 15 sentences explaining the gesture a girl made. When authors do this, I tend to get distracted from the true purpose of the story, and I get up by the lengthy descriptions.

I feel like his writing style is more optimistic and hopeful than Edgar Allan Poe. His writing isn't depressing or creepy, so I actually like it. It has a happier tone and it is not as confusing as Edgar Allan Poe.

Prompt: "How do you feel about Nathaniel Hawthorne's writing style? Do you like it? Why or why not?"

I like Nathaniel Hawthorne’s writing. This is because of his darker and mysterious tone that the American Gothicism has. His writing is about interesting topics as well, like Salem.

    1. I agree with what you said about his use of a dark and mysterious tone, such as in the beginning of "Goodman Brown" where even though the man's name is "Goodman" he speaks of doing something bad in the night.

My feelings towards Hawthorne's writing is still up in the air. I was not a fan of Poes so reading this after already gave me a bad feeling because i had his writing in my head still. I feel as if i was able to read more of his writings then i could decide if i really liked it or not.

I like Hawthorne’s writing because it is much more realistic and easy to follow than other Gothic writings. It is also not as dark, depressing, or eerie as other pieces from this time period.

I personally don’t like Hawthorne’s writing style. I have a lot of trouble understanding what he’s trying to convey, probably because his style is so different from my own. However, once I do figure out his meaning, I find his work fascinating. He has some really great ideas that would be enjoyable and enlightening to discuss, but I’d need someone to explain them to me first.

Like you said, once you understand his work it is fascinating and captivating. In some cases, many people can grasp what he's saying right away. But I do agree, it is hard to understand most of the time.

    2. Three adjectives I would use to describe Hawthorne’s style of writing are mysterious, deep, and open-ended. Mysterious, because in the beginning of the story “Artist Of The Beautiful”, for example, he talks about an unknown man who worked in a small watch shop in the middle of what seems like nowhere. Deep, because he can go on and on about one specific thing, going into a deeper detail of why something is like this or why a certain character acts this way. Open-ended, because in some cases his stories leave you with an open mind and lots of questions.

First I thought it was interesting that Hawthorne met president Lincoln, as I have always admired Lincoln and would loved to have met him myself. I also thought it was interesting that his wife was transcendentalist, and he was gothic. I wonder if that cause any argumens between the two

His writing is interesting but i dont really like it just because it is so dark and he likes to go into excessive detail over one thing which can kind of get boring.

    Prompt #1
I personally don’t really have feelings for his style of writing, it’s not as dark as Edgar Allan Poe’s writing but it’s still very boring and unethusiastic. The way he describes things is kinda annoying because he describes them for multiple sentences.

  27. Hawthorne's writing certainly seems more upbeat and happier than Poe's. In my excerpt, he is writing of two lovers and they seem to be fairly happy, whereas other Gothic writers are much more dramatic, creepy, and sad.

Prompt: How do you feel about Nathaniel Hawthorne's writing style? Do you like it? Why or why not?
I feel like Nathaniel Hawthorne’s writing style focuses on the bad in people, although I have only read one piece of his work, it seemed to focus on how humans look down on one another. I wouldn’t particularly say I enjoy reading that, however I do like it more than idealistic writing because i feel it is more realistic, but it’s not fun to remind yourself of how crappy people really are.

I am indifferent about Hawthorne’s writing style, i feel as though he takes too long to say one thing. His long explanations may be evidence of a deeper message inside of his use of grammar and finer details, but I feel as though it makes it extremely boring to read.

    Nathaniel Hawthorne Prompt

If you had to select only three adjectives to describe Nathaniel Hawthorne's writing style, which three adjectives would you select? Explain why these adjectives best describe Hawthorne's writing style.

I would choose the adjectives heavy, testing and dark. I selected these three adjectives because hawthornes literature was often very intelligently written and contained a lot of emotions, and elements of good literature. I chose testing because Hawthorne often had themes that tested your morals and beliefs. In the biography it said he was influenced by puritan literature. The purpose of Puritan literature was often to make religious people feel guilty about their sins. This could be where Hawthorne go this. Finally I selected the word dark. Hawthorne often wrote things that that were not so happy. He was also considered a Dark Romanticism author.

  33. I feel Nathaniel Hawthorne's writing very convincing and descriptive, because in the story about Goodman Brown he is descriptive in the pink ribbon blowing in the wind, and he made his wife's tone change and i'm not even hearing it, i am reading it.
